Sky Indonesia Ready To Be Greeted By Perseid 12 August 13 Meteor Rain

JAKARTA - Research Center for Space Research at the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) Thomas Djamaluddin said the Perseid meteor shower would again decorate Indonesia's skies on Tuesday's Wednesday, August 12, 2025.

"Perseid meteor rain is an annual phenomenon when the earth passes through the dust remnant of the Swift-Tuttle comet," Thomas said when confirmed in Jakarta, Tuesday, August 12.

He explained that this phenomenon is one of the annual astronomical events that celestial observers around the world have been waiting for.

Thomas ensured that this meteor shower did not have a bad impact on the earth at all. Small meteor objects will burn out in the atmosphere before reaching the surface.

"The best time to observe the Perseid meteor shower is at dawn in the northeast. The condition is that the weather is sunny, the field of view is not hindered, and is far from light pollution," he said.

However, he reminded that on the night of August 12 August 13, there was still post-purnama light on the moon, so the number of meteors that were seen was probably only a dozen per hour.

According to Thomas, meteor showers are not only visually beautiful, but are also a means of public education regarding the activities of celestial bodies.

"Metetry rain is an annual event. There are several events that serve as a reminder that the earth at any time passes through the remains of cometary dust," he said.

Perseid meteor showers occur every year around August, when the earth passes through the Swift-Tutitle comet orbital path. This tiny to medium-sized dust grain left by the comet can cause tens to hundreds of meteors per hour in ideal conditions without light disturbances.

Apart from Perseid, other meteor showers that occur throughout the year include Quadrantid, Lyrid, Eta Aquarid, and Geminid, with different intensities and characteristics depending on the source of the comet or asteroid.
