JAKARTA - US President Donald Trump instructed his trading team to continue trading negotiations with Thailand and Cambodia after the two countries agreed to a ceasefire.
"Just spoke with Acting Prime Minister of Thailand and Cambodian Prime Minister," Trump said in a post on Truth Social.
"I have instructed my trade team to restart trade negotiations," he added.
Thai and Cambodian leaders agreed to an unconditional immediate ceasefire to end clashes on the border.
This was conveyed by Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim on Monday, July 28, after the talks between the two Southeast Asian neighbors in Malaysia.
Negotiations were attended by Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Acting Prime Minister of Thailand Pomtham Wechayachai after negotiations at Putrajaya Malaysia.
At the opening of a press conference with Thai and Cambodian leaders, Anwar said the ceasefire would take effect soon and unconditionally from midnight this evening.
"This is the final," he said.
Thailand-Kamboja accused each other of starting fighting last week, before stepping up with heavy artillery bombings and Thai airstrikes along their land border 817 km (508 miles).
Anwar previously proposed ceasefire negotiations as soon as a prolonged border dispute erupted into conflict on Thursday. Meanwhile, China and the United States also offered assistance in the negotiations.
Tensions between Thailand and Cambodia have risen since the death of a Cambodian soldier in a brief battle in late May.
