Despite Recess, Dasco Asks Commission I Of The DPR To Invite The Government To Discuss Data Issues For Indonesian Citizens Managed By The US

JAKARTA - Deputy Speaker of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Sufmi Dasco Ahmad, asked Commission I of the DPR to immediately invite the government through the relevant ministries, for a meeting to discuss the issue of data on Indonesian citizens (WNI) managed by the United States (US) as part of a trade agreement between the two countries.

Although currently the DPR RI has started to undergo a recess period until August 14. According to Dasco, this issue needs to be explained by the government openly so as not to cause concern in the community.

"Yes, we have asked commission I to immediately (discussed, ed), if necessary during this recess period to communicate with the government, either have a dialogue to come or then invite them so that the things conveyed regarding the data can also be clearer," said Dasco at the Parliament Complex, Senayan, Jakarta, Friday, July 25.

Dasco emphasized that the leadership of the DPR could not comment and take further action regarding the issue of transferring Indonesian citizen data to the US if there was no clear information from the government.

"Well, we can't respond yet because we also want to see what the previous one looked like, and what it's like now," said the Gerindra legislator.

As is known, this issue was busy after the White House said that the Indonesian government would provide legal certainty related to the management of Indonesian citizens' personal data to the United States. This is part of a trade agreement between the two countries which was officially released on Monday, July 22, US time.

Meanwhile, the Indonesian government stated that negotiations with the United States after the decline in trade rates by President Donald Trump were still ongoing.

The Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs, through its spokesperson on Wednesday, July 23, also confirmed that the transfer of data in question as part of the tariff agreement between Indonesia and the US, only includes commercial data, not personal data or state-owned strategic data.

Personal data includes information such as name, age, or phone number, while the commercial data referred to in the issue includes data from the company's sales or data from field research.
