Cak Imin Suggests Regional Heads To Be Elected Indirectly, Puan: Still A Discourse

JAKARTA - DPR Speaker Puan Maharani responded casually to the proposal of PKB Chairman Muhaimin Iskandar or Cak Imin regarding regional heads being elected by their respective central governments or DPRDs.

The PDIP politician conveyed that Cak Imin's proposal was still in the discourse stage and had not yet been discussed at the DPR faction level.

"Regarding what was conveyed by Cak Imin, it is still a discourse," he told reporters at the DPR/MPR complex on Thursday, July 24.

Puan explained, if the discourse is taken seriously to be discussed in the Election Bill, then each faction in the DPR must gather with each other.

"Of course all parties must gather, negotiate to discuss this," said Puan.

Puan added that proposals related to the Election Bill after the decision of the Constitutional Court regarding the separation of elections must be discussed in accordance with the applicable mechanism.

Moreover, he said, Commission II of the DPR is currently discussing Bill Number 7 of 2017 concerning Elections. In the discussion, Commission II of the DPR involved the Ministry of Home Affairs of the KPU, Bawaslu and DKPP.

"Because to do this, there must be a regulated mechanism," said Puan.

Previously, PKB General Chair Muhaimin Iskandar or Cak Imin related to regional heads elected by their respective central governments or DPRDs.

This was conveyed by Cak Imin at the peak of the celebration of the 27th Birthday (Harlah) of PKB at the Jakarta Convention Center (JCC), Senayan, Central Jakarta, Wednesday (23/7/2025) night.

"The governor's first pattern as a representative of the central government was appointed by the central government, but the regent, because he was not a representative of the central government, the regent was elected by the people through the DPRD," said Muhaimin.
