JAKARTA - MPR chairman Ahmad Muzani assessed that President Prabowo Subianto's statement that the relationship between the Gerindra Party and the PDI-P was like brothers and sisters reflects the historical and emotional closeness between the two parties.

Muzani said that the PDI-P was a party that was first born and played a role in national political travel, while Gerindra, who was only 17 years old in 2025, saw PDIP as a "brother in the struggle".

"Gerindra is only 17 years old, while the PDI-P is much older. Even if it is pulled back with the PNI, it is much older, so Pak Prabowo thinks it is a foster brother or older brother of the struggle," he said as quoted by ANTARA, Wednesday, July 23.

Muzani also said that although the political views were often different, Gerindra and PDIP had many common ground.

He gave an example of Prabowo's candidacy as vice president accompanying Megawati Soekarnoputri in the 2009 presidential election as one of the historical evidences of the close relationship between the two figures.

He did not rule out the possibility of establishing cooperation between Gerindra and PDIP in the future government, even though the decision was entirely in the hands of President Prabowo and PDIP General Chair Megawati Soekarnoputri.

Muzani also appreciated the PDIP's attitude in parliament which he considered accommodative and constructive to the government.

"We are greatly helped by some of the PDIP's very accommodative and very good attitudes in government, especially in parliament," he said.

Previously, President Prabowo said that PDIP and the Gerindra Party were actually brothers based on the historical background of the struggle.

At the inauguration ceremony of the Red and White Village Cooperative in Klaten, Central Java, which was also attended by DPR Speaker Puan Maharani, President Prabowo emphasized that Bung Karno, the grandfather of Puan Maharani, belonged to all Indonesian people.

The Head of State joked that if his chest was opened, there was Marhaen in it. Marhaen or Marhaenism is an ideology that was introduced by Bung Karno, whose term came from a farmer named Marhaen.

"I said Bung Karno belonged to all Indonesian people. Yuwun throughout Mbak Puan, Bung Karno my father too, maybe if he was cut (pointing his chest), Marhaen would come out too. This is actually PDIP and Gerindra, this is my brother," he said.
