Suharto Reveals The Great Mission After Being Elected As Deputy Chair Of The Supreme Court For Judicial Affairs

JAKARTA - Supreme Court Justice Suharto expressed his readiness to become the navigator of the Supreme Court (MA) after being elected as Deputy Chairman of the Supreme Court for Judicial Affairs.

He conveyed this in the Special Plenary Session which was held at the MA Building, Jakarta, Thursday, July 10.

"We can be conjectured as the navigator, observe the weather, observe the atmosphere, so that this large MA ship can run as well as possible to achieve the vision and mission that has been launched," Suharto said in his remarks after being elected as quoted by Antara.

In the organizational structure of the Supreme Court, the Deputy Chairperson of the Judicial Division is tasked with assisting the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court in technical matters of the judiciary, including coordinating the work of the heads of the case room.

"So, the captain is still His Excellency the Chairman of the Supreme Court. We, and later assisted by Non-Judicial Representatives and other leaders, will support and carry out the policy line of the Chairman of the Supreme Court," Suharto continued.

Suharto was elected after obtaining 25 votes out of 33 valid votes in the one-round election which was attended by 39 Supreme Court justices. Another candidate, Supreme Court Justice Surya Jaya, received eight votes, while six votes were declared invalid. Two Supreme Court justices were absent due to illness.

This election takes place behind closed doors and without a campaign, according to the tradition within the Supreme Court. The chairman of MA Sunarto who chaired the trial stated that the elected leadership would soon be proposed to take an oath in front of Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto.

After the inauguration, the position of Deputy Chairperson of the Supreme Court for Non-Judicial Affairs, which was previously filled by Suharto, will soon be filled through further elections.

Suharto is not a new figure in the leadership of the Supreme Court. Previously, he served as Deputy Chair of the Supreme Court for Non-Judicial Affairs since May 15, 2024. This experience made him feel that he had found chemistry with the Chairman of the Supreme Court Sunarto.

"The chemistry has started to be felt. We have understood many things together," said Suharto.

He also highlighted the collegial collective culture in every decision-making in the Supreme Court. According to him, solidity in leadership meetings is the power of the Supreme Court to maintain the policy direction of judicial institutions.

"In the end, we still have a commitment to support the Chair of the Supreme Court in directing the large MA ship to continue to be trusted by the community. We must restore public trust in the judicial institutions we love together," Suharto said.

He also expressed his appreciation to his fellow Supreme Court justices for the trust that had been given to him.
