JAKARTA - Foreign Minister Sugiono said that the self-sufficiency program promoted by President Prabowo Subianto would make Indonesia able to build an economy that does not depend on anyone, so that it can carry out foreign relations properly.

This was said by Foreign Minister Sugiono when asked about the reciprocity rate of United States President Donald Trump, on the sidelines of a series of ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meetings/Post Ministerial Conference (AMM/PMC) at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Center (KLC) on July 8-11.

"We see this is something we have to realize, this is a wake up call for us too," said Foreign Minister Sugiono in a statement to reporters, Wednesday, July 9.

"I think what President Prabowo did and announced was on the right track. We want to be self-sufficient, meet our food, meet our energy. This is something basic that must be fulfilled," he explained.

"Then how do we invest in our human capital, through a free nutritious meal, so that we can really build an economic power that doesn't depend on anyone and can still carry out our foreign relations well with anyone," he said.

As previously reported, the Indonesian Foreign Minister said President Trump's reciprocal tariff was not discussed in detail in the 58th AMM plenary session which was held today.

"Not discussing tariffs in detail. I think each country has a negotiation mechanism," he explained.

"But the point is, we agree that there will be no retaliation (retaliation), then how to strengthen our respective economies as ASEAN countries and as ASEAN as a whole," he said.

It is known that President Trump this week signed an executive order regarding the imposition of reciprocal rates which will take effect on August 1.

A number of countries have been affected by this policy with different amounts, Malaysia (25 percent), Indonesia (32 percent), Cambodia and Thailand (36 percent) and Laos and Myanmar 40 percent). Meanwhile, Vietnam, which is currently subject to 46 percent, managed to reduce it to 20 percent.
