JAKARTA - Indonesian Migrant Worker Protection Minister (P2MI) Abdul Kadir Karding explained the importance of the role of universities in building a safe and well managed migration ecosystem. One concrete form is the Migrant Center or one-stop service center for prospective migrant workers.
This was conveyed when receiving an audience from the ranks of the Indonesian University of Education (UPI) at the Office of the Ministry of Protection of Indonesian Migrant Workers (KemenP2MI), Jakarta on Monday, July 7.
"We are trying to encourage the formation of Migrant Centers in all places. It can be done by universities, schools, the private sector, or local governments. The important thing is that there is room to prepare our community to be ready to work abroad with skills [upskilling] and adequate protection," said Karding.
In addition, Karding also highlighted the potential for cooperation with UPI in the establishment of integrated training centers, mapping labor competence, to developing migrant class curriculum.
"It would be even better if at the university, in the early semester there was already an interest. We have prepared (training) the language from the start, the country, and others. So when they graduate, they are ready to work abroad," he explained.

Therefore, Karding encourages cooperation between KemenP2MI and UPI. The goal is to prepare integrated training for prospective Indonesian migrant workers.
"I think one that we might be able to consolidate for cooperation, the first is the field of education and teaching through the establishment of an integrated training center like earlier," he said.
Responding to this, UPI Chancellor Didi Sukyadi expressed the readiness of his institution to actively contribute to strengthening labor migration governance, including through the establishment of a Migrant Center within the UPI.
"If there was an idea for the Migrant Center, for us it was very fitting and very suitable. From the classroom side, language training, and connection, we are ready. What we need is administrative guidance and regulations so as not to violate the rules," said Didi.
Chancellor Didi said that his party would start mapping students' interest in working abroad from an early age, including providing language training as part of the study program.
"I will ask for data on new students, who is interested in working abroad. In the morning they learn academic content, and in the afternoon learn the language. Our target is 50 percent of the generation is ready to go abroad," he said.
Not only that, but UPI also opens the possibility to integrate the theme of migrant workers into the Real Work Lecture (KKN) program, especially in the pockets of migrants such as Cianjur and Majalengka.
"If P2MI is asked for KKN in the pockets of migrant workers, we are ready. As long as there are modules and initial training from the ministry. This can be a form of service as well as empowerment," said Didi.
