NATUNA - Natuna Regency Government (Pemkab), Riau Islands announced that the teaching and learning process at the People's School (SR) in the region began in the new school year 2025-2026.

Natuna Regent Cen Sui Lan in Natuna, Saturday, said Natuna was chosen by the Central Government as one of the regions implementing the inaugural People's School.

"We started the teaching and learning process of People's Schools in the new academic year 2025-2026, in accordance with directions from the central government," he said.

Currently, the Natuna Regency Government is preparing the Hajj Dormitory building to be used as a place to live as well as a temporary study room, because the People's School special building is not yet available.

"The number of students who will take part in this program is around 100 people, including elementary school (SD), junior high school (SMP) and high school (SMA) levels," he said.

The Hajj Dormitory Building will be repaired so that students, educators, and education personnel who also live there feel safe and comfortable while undergoing the teaching and learning process. This repair is needed, because several parts of the Hajj Dormitory were damaged.

Although SR operates, other schools continue to operate, because SR is specifically for underprivileged children, according to data from the Ministry of Social Affairs.

"The building repair funds come from the Central Government," he said.

The Natuna Regency Government has prepared an area of 11.4 hectares to build a People's School unit.

Head of the Natuna Regency Social Service (Dinsos) Puryanti said the land is located in East Bunguran District, which is the capital area of Natuna Regency.

People's Schools are free educational programs aimed at children from reductive families one and two, based on National Sole Social Economic Data (DTSEN). School-age children include the age of six to 19 years. In Natuna, there are more than 1,000 DTSEN registered. The purpose of this program is to provide access to quality education to them, as well as help improve the quality of life and expand opportunities in the future.

"The land needed is about six to 10 hectares, but we have prepared 11.4 hectares, located behind the Natuna Grand Mosque," he said.
