JAKARTA - Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said a 12-day war with Iran had created an opportunity for Israel to free the hostages in Gaza.

"I want to let you know that as you may know, many opportunities have opened up now after this victory, there are many opportunities," Netanyahu said.

"First of all, to save the hostages. Of course we also have to solve Gaza's problem, to beat Hamas, but I estimate that we will achieve both of those tasks," Netanyahu continued according to a statement issued by his office.

Israel's Chief of Military Staff Lieutenant General Eyal Zamir previously said the war in Iran, which ended on June 24, could help advance Israel's goal against Iran-backed Hamas groups in the Gaza Strip.

Israeli public radio Kan reported Israel's security cabinet had met on Sunday, June 29 evening and will meet again on Monday.

Israeli strategic affairs minister Ron Dermer, Netanyahu's confidant, reportedly held talks about Iran and Gaza at the White House on Monday, June 30.

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump said Netanyahu was negotiating an agreement with Hamas, although no leader provided details.

The United States proposed a 60-day ceasefire and the release of half of the hostages in exchange for Palestinian prisoners and the remains of other Palestinians.

"I think it's close. I just spoke to some of the people involved," Trump said.

"We think next week we will reach a ceasefire," he continued.

Hamas will release the remaining hostages once a permanent ceasefire is imposed.

On Sunday, the Israeli military ordered Palestinians to vacate areas in northern Gaza before the intensive fighting against Hamas.
