JAKARTA - Air India flights from Mumbai to Chennai were forced to make an emergency landing at Mumbai airport, after the smell of burning in the cabin. Air India flight with flight number AI 639 also managed to land safely in Mumbai.
"The flight landed safely in Mumbai, and the change of planes has begun. Our ground counterparts in Mumbai provide all the necessary support to passengers to minimize the inconvenience caused by this unexpected disruption," Air India said in a statement as reported by Ndtv, Sunday 29 June.
A passenger posted on social media that the plane took off at 23.50 local time. After flying about 45 minutes, the captain announced that they would return to Mumbai due to technical problems.
"We landed safely at around 00.47 in the morning," said the passenger, Utsav Tiwari.
Air India is indeed in the spotlight after the airline's crash on June 12. It is known that Air India AI 171 with the destination of London Gatwick was piloted by Captain Sumeet Sabharwal and co-pilot
They took off from Ahmedabad Airport at 13.39 p.m. local time, carrying 242 passengers and nearly 100 tons of fuel. However, just a few seconds after takeoff, an emergency call was heard from the cockpit.
That was the last transmission from Air India 171 before the plane lost altitude and hit land in the blaze.

Captain Kishore Chinta, a former investigator from the Indian Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB), called this accident a very unusual thing. According to him, it is very rare for an airplane that is still under control to crash to the ground in less than a minute after takeoff. So far, no similar incidents have been recorded in India's aviation history.
Several provisional allegations began to appear in the investigation process. There is a possibility that the engine will shut down due to bird attacks or contaminated fuel. The weather conditions are hot and the full load may also make the plane's fly fail to provide maximum lift.
