JAKARTA - The United States has asked China to prevent Iran's intention to close the Strait of Hormuz in retaliation for the US attack on its nuclear site.
China did not immediately respond to the US request. But China is calling for greater international efforts to defuse the Israeli-Iran conflict to prevent further impact on the global economy.
When asked about Iran's parliamentary support for closing the important shipping route, a spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Kemlu) said the Persian Gulf and surrounding waters were vital routes for trade in goods and international energy.
"Maintaining security and stability in this region serves the common interests of the international community," said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun on Monday, June 23.
"Chingkok calls on the international community to intensify efforts to defuse conflicts and prevent regional turbulence from having a further impact on global economic development," he added.
Connecting the oil-rich Persian Gulf with open oceans, the Strait of Hormuz is one of the most important oil checkpoints in the world. About 20 million barrels of crude oil per day, or 20% of global consumption, flows through a narrow strait between Iran and Oman last year, according to the US Energy Information Agency (EIA).
For China, the world's largest oil importer and buyer of the largest crude oil from Iran, the Strait of Hormuz is even more important.

China imports 5.4 million barrels of crude oil daily through the strait in the first three months of 2025, according to EIA estimates.
That is equivalent to about half of China's daily crude imports in the first quarter of this year, according to CNN calculations based on Chinese customs data.
Earlier on Sunday, June 22, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio asked China to prevent Iran from closing the Strait of Hormuz.
