JAKARTA - The Indonesian Consumer Foundation (YLKI) emphasized that the ratification of the Regional Regulation (Perda) for Non-Smoking Areas (KTR) in Jakarta must be accelerated.

"YLKI asks that the Regional Regulation on KTR, which is currently formed by the special committee, can be ratified in 2025, considering that this regional regulation has been long enough and has not been ratified," said YLKI Chairman Niti Emiliana in a statement in Jakarta, Sunday, June 22.

Niti said, Jakarta as a metropolitan city that does not yet have a KTR Perda, is certainly a red report card regarding consumer protection for health as a result of exposure to cigarette smoke from others.

"YLKI asks the KTR Regional Regulation to contain more comprehensive substance and strengthen consumer protection efforts due to exposure to active smoker smoke to people around them, especially the elderly, pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers and toddlers," he said.

He also said that the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government must present regulations that can protect consumer health.

"As a global city, Jakarta can imitate Singapore in how to implement a good area without cigarettes," he said.

Niti said that the Regional Regulation on KTR is also mandated by the Health Law Number 17 of 2023 concerning Health which requires the city government to create and implement the Regional Regulation on Non-Smoking Areas (KTR).

"In accordance with the theme of the 498th Anniversary, 'Jakarta is Global and Empowered', the ratification of the KTR Regional Regulation can change the culture of the people of Jakarta who are healthier and free from cigarette smoke in public places," he said.
