The Cirebon City Resort Police (Polres) arrested a fictitious online social gathering perpetrator with the mode of promising high profits with the initials YM (29).

"Today we arrested the perpetrator and the one who reported it was one, but the victims were in Cirebon City and Karawang Regency," said Cirebon City Police Chief AKBP Eko Iskandar in Cirebon, Tuesday, as reported by Antara.

He explained that YM was known to have carried out the social gathering for the last three years, with the lure of a profit of up to 60 percent of the capital deposited by the participants.

However, he said, the money received by the victim was never returned, either in the form of profit or capital.

Eko said that from the results of the investigation, the perpetrator allegedly used a hole-closed excavation scheme, where funds from the participants were only used to pay old participants.

"This activity is carried out online through social media," he said.

According to him, in this case the police have only received an official report with a loss value of Rp46.4 million. The victim complained about this case after no longer receiving the proceeds from the funds that had been deposited.

Currently, his party is still waiting for other reports from the public who feel they are victims of similar fraud.

"The perpetrator offered online social gatherings with promises of big profits, but the funds were actually used to close obligations to previous participants," he said.

The police chief said investigators had secured a number of evidences related to this case, including proof of transfer, screenshot of communication, and list of names of social gathering participants.

He emphasized that YM is now charged with Article 378 and/or 372 of the Criminal Code concerning fraud and embezzlement, with a penalty of up to four years in prison.

"This case continues to be developed to reveal the number of victims and the flow of funds. We open a complaint post for people who feel aggrieved by the fraudulent online social gathering activities," he said.
