JAKARTA - Russia launched one of its biggest airstrikes on Kyiv in more than three years of war and attacked a maternity ward in the southern city of Odesa. Two people were reported dead.

The attack follows Russia's biggest drone strike in the war in Ukraine on Monday. This is part of an intensive bombing that Moscow says is retaliation for an attack by Ukrainian forces on Russia.

The loud explosion rocked Kyiv followed by a fire on Tuesday, June 10 in the morning, leaving thick plumes of smoke over the city, witnesses Reuters said.

Four people were hospitalized after seven of the 10 districts in the capital were attacked.

"Today is one of the biggest attacks in Kyiv," President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said.

"Russian and Shahed (unmanned aircraft) missile attacks have sunk the efforts of the United States and other countries around the world to force Russia to make peace," he continued.

Zelenskiy urged Ukrainian allies to take steps to force Russia to make peace, and Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha calls for new sanctions and air defense systems immediately.

Although Moscow and Kyiv have held two rounds of live peace negotiations in recent weeks, the only real progress is an agreement on the exchange of prisoners of war, and Russia continues to advance along the front lines in eastern Ukraine.

Moscow and Kyiv blame each other for the lack of progress in ending the war, which has been raging since Russia's full-scale invasion in February 2022.

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump expressed frustration with both sides.

Russia temporarily suspended flights overnight at four airports serving Moscow, at Pulkovo Airport St Petersburg, and at airports in nine other cities after the Defense Ministry said Ukraine had launched more drones to Russia.

Flights in Moscow and several other cities then resumed operations, but restrictions still apply in St. Petersburg at 04.30 local time. No damage was reported.
