5.0 Magnitude Earthquake Shakes Pangandaran, Feels To Cilacap And Kebumen

The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) detected an earthquake with a magnitude of 5.0 that rocked the southeast of Pangandaran, West Java, on Monday night, June 9, 2025. Earthquake shocks were also felt in a number of areas of Central Java, including Cilacap and Kebumen.

"The earthquake occurred at 23.55 WIB. Based on the results of the BMKG analysis, the latest earthquake parameters showed a magnitude of 5.0," said Director of Earthquake and Tsunami BMKG, Daryono, quoted on Tuesday, June 10.

The epicenter of the earthquake was located at coordinates 8.09 degrees South Latitude and 108.71 degrees East Longitude, about 49 kilometers southeast of Pangandaran Regency, with a depth of 70 kilometers.

BMKG said this earthquake was classified as an intermediate earthquake caused by rock deformation activity in plates (intraplate earthquake), with an oblique thrust movement mechanism (upshift).

The mapping of BMKG shocks shows the intensity of the earthquake reaching a scale III MMI in the Pangandaran area, which means that vibrations are felt inside the house and it is as if a truck is passing. Meanwhile, shocks with a scale of II'II MMI were felt in the Tasikmalaya, Garut, Cilacap, Banyumas, and Kebumen areas.

As of Tuesday morning, the BMKG had not received any reports of damage caused by the earthquake. In addition, the modeling results stated that this earthquake did not have the potential to cause a tsunami. BMKG also has not detected any aftershocks until 00.20 WIB.

BMKG urges the public to remain calm and not be provoked by irresponsible information.

People are expected to stay away from buildings that are cracked or damaged by the earthquake. Make sure the house or building where you live is earthquake-resistant enough or not to experience dangerous damage before returning to it," concluded Daryono.
