Medan, Palembang, and Several Cities are Expected to Rain Today

JAKARTA - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) predicts that Medan-Palembang and other major cities in Indonesia are potentially hit by rain today, Sunday, August 16.

BMKG Praktirawan Sufia said that the potential rain was triggered by atmospheric dynamics, one of which was the formation of wind deceleration areas or convergence and wind meeting or confluence which increased the growth of rain clouds.

"This combination of atmospheric dynamics causes the potential for significant weather in several regions of Indonesia, so it is necessary to increase preparedness for the potential for moderate to heavy rain," said Sufia, quoted by Antara, Sunday morning.

He said that for the western region of Indonesia, Palembang is expected to experience light intensity rain along with a number of other major cities, such as Medan, Padang, Tanjung Pinang, Jambi, Bengkulu, Pangkal Pinang, and Tanjung Selor.

Meanwhile, other western areas such as Banda Aceh, Pekanbaru, Serang, Jakarta, Bandung, Semarang, Yogyakarta, Surabaya, Samarinda, and Banjarmasin are predicted to be cloudy to cloudy, and hazy air conditions in Bandar Lampung, Pontianak, and Palangkaraya.

As for the eastern part of Indonesia, light rain potential is predicted to occur in Mamuju, Palu, Ambon, Manokwari, and Jayapura.

Cities such as Denpasar, Mataram, Kupang, Makassar, Kendari, Gorontalo, Manado, Ternate, Sorong, and Merauke are expected to be sunny to cloudy to thick clouds, while the Nabire and Jayawijaya regions are potentially covered in smoke or fog.
