JAKARTA - The Indian Navy launched a rescue operation following an explosion and fire broke out on a cargo ship bound for the country's financial capital Mumbai.
The explosion caused about 40 containers to fall into the Arabian Sea and forced several crew members of the ship to jump into the sea to escape the blaze, according to a report by the local television station NDTV citing a spokesman for the Ministry of Defense.

As reported by ANTARA from Anadolu, the 270-meter-long ship with a raft or a depth of 12.5 meters departed from the capital Sri Lanka, Colombo on June 7 and is scheduled to arrive in Mumbai on June 10.
According to the Kerala State Disaster Management Authority, the ship with 22 crew members carried more than 650 containers.
The Navy said action to evacuate crews by air was carried out immediately after instructions from higher authorities.
