JAKARTA - A total of 42 people were shot dead in a series of weekend attacks in the Gguer West district of Benue state, Nigeria.

It was reported that 32 bodies were found in the attack on Sunday, May 25 in the villages of Ahume and Aondona. While 10 others were killed in separate attacks in the villages of Tyolasa and Tse-Ubiam on Saturday, said Victor Omninin, chairman of the Gwer West local government.

"It's a sad situation. As we speak, we still find bodies," Omninin told reporters.

Benue is in the Nigerian Middle Belt, the area where the majority of Muslims in the North meet with a Christian majority in the South. The region faces competition over land use, with conflicts between herders, who are looking for grazing grounds for their livestock, and farmers, who need fertile land for farming.

This tension is often exacerbated by the overlap of ethnic and religious differences.

Benue Governor Hyacinth Iormem Alia's office said a Catholic priest was also shot in the area by the attackers, and in critical but stable condition.
