Weather Forecast May 22: Thunderstorms In Jakarta, Bandung, Semarang, And Merauke

JAKARTA The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) predicts light rain to heavy rain accompanied by lightning will flush Jakarta and a number of major cities in Indonesia on Thursday, May 22, 2025. The public is advised to be aware of the potential for extreme weather and the accompanying impacts.

Light rain is predicted to occur in Medan, Bengkulu, Bandar Lampung, Pangkal Pinang, Serang, Yogyakarta, Surabaya, Denpasar, Mataram, Samarinda, Palangka Raya, Makassar, Mamuju, Palu, Kendari, Ternate, Ambon, Sorong, Manokwari, Nabire, and Jayawijaya," said BMKG forecaster Apdillah, quoted from ANTARA.

Rain with moderate intensity is expected to flush the Tanjung Selor and Jayapura areas. Meanwhile, heavy rain accompanied by lightning has the potential to occur in Jambi, Palembang, Jakarta, Bandung, Semarang, Banjarmasin, and Merauke.

The cities such as Banda Aceh, Pekanbaru, Tanjung Pinang, Padang, Kupang, Pontianak, Gorontalo, and Manado are forecasted to be thick or foggy cloudy with temperatures ranging from 23 to 29 degrees Celsius.

The BMKG explained that the weather conditions were influenced by complex atmospheric dynamics, including the presence of cyclonic circulation in the western Indian Ocean of Lampung, the Sulawesi Sea, and the Maluku Sea. This phenomenon forms a convergence area that increases the growth of rain clouds in the western Java Sea, Sulawesi Sea, and Arafuru Sea.

"This condition also increases the potential for high waves in the waters," added Apdillah.

BMKG also reminded the potential for tidal flooding in a number of coastal areas, such as West Java, Central Java, South Kalimantan, and North Kalimantan.

Fishermen and shipping players are asked to be aware of high waves due to wind speeds that are estimated to exceed 25 knots, especially in the waters of the Indian Ocean south of Java to the southern Arafuru Sea.
