JAKARTA - The Spanish consumer affairs ministry ordered Airbnb to withdraw more than 65,000 holiday rental advertisements from its platform. The ads are considered to violate applicable regulations.

The Spanish government as well as city councils and regional authorities launched a general crackdown on tourism rentals through sites such as Airbnb and Booking.com, which many Spanishs say created overvising visits, narrowed housing supplies, and made rental prices unaffordable for local residents.

Most of the blocked Airbnb ads don't include license numbers, while others don't mention whether their owners are individuals or companies, the ministry said in a statement.

As reported by Reuters on Monday, May 19, Consumer Affairs Minister Pablo Bustanduy said the purpose of the bloc was to end the "lack of control" and general "illegality" in the holiday rental business and "support access to housing and protect consumer rights."

Barcelona Mayor Jaume Collboni took Spain's toughest move so far in June last year when he ordered a total ban on leasing for tourism in 2028.
