JAKARTA - US President Donald Trump said Qatar was offended by the reaction in his country to the prize Boeing 747-8 aircraft worth US$400 million (around Rp6.6 trillion) from the Qatar royal family.

Earlier, US media quoted Senator Susan Collins, chairman of the US Senate Allocation Committee, as saying the gift Qatar to be awarded to Trump was against law and ethics, as well as raising concerns over spying.

"They gave it to the United States Air Force/Department of Defense, not to me," Trump said in an interview with Fox News on Friday, May 16.

The US TV station told Trump it had asked Qatari Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani about the US reaction to the prize and he replied he did not understand.

"I think he was offended, actually. He gave a gift to help someone who had helped them, that's a very good sign," Trump said.

"This aircraft is not for me, this is for the United States Air Force, for anyone who becomes president ... one day that (airplane) will no longer be used," Trump said.

He explained that the Air Force One of the US presidential plane is currently 42 years old and Boeing is said to be slow in producing two new replacement aircraft.

ABC News reports a Boeing 747-8 aircraft, dubbed the "flying palace," will be the presidential plane until the end of Trump's term.

After that, the plane will be transferred to the Trump presidential library foundation, so he can continue to use it.

The transfer of such properties is not considered a legal bribe, according to a White House assessment, ABC News said in its report.
