JAKARTA - Swedish journalist Joakim Medin who was jailed in March in Turkey on charges of terrorism and humiliation, returned to his country.
"Hard work in silence has paid off relatively," Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson said via X on Friday, May 16, evening.
Medin landed in Sweden after several hours of flight.
Kristersson thanked the foreign office and European counterparts for helping to secure Medin's release.
Medin, who was in Turkey covering the protests against the arrest of Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu, was charged with "insulting the president" and "becoming a member of a terrorist organization" and imprisoned pending trial.
Turkish authorities say Medin is among the 15 suspects designated as the organizer, promote, or linked to a demonstration in Stockholm in 2023, in which a mannequin resembling President Tayyip Erdogan was hanged outside the town hall.
