JAKARTA - A mountain climber from India died on Mount Everest after suffering symptoms of a height illness as he descended from the mountain on the border between Nepal and Tibet.
The climber, Subrata Ghosh, 45, experienced a high or altitude sickness disease and chose not to go down from the top of the mountain as high as 8,848.86 meters above sea level.
"Ghosh peaked at around 2 p.m., but began to show signs of fatigue and height motion during his descent," said the Managing Director at Snowy Horizon Treks who organized the expedition, Bodhraj Bhandari, quoted from The Himalayan Times via Hindustan Times, Friday 16 May.
Ghosh is part of the climber's expectation team "Mountainering Association of Krishnanagar 'Snowy Everest Expedition 2025" and peaked on Saturday afternoon last week.
Sherpa or her porter, Champal Tamang, tried to persuade Ghosh to come down the mountain while the two were both in the Hillary Step area, but to no avail. Tamang then returned alone to Camp IV on Thursday night and reported the incident on Friday morning.
"He finally refused to keep going," said Bodhraj.
Currently officers are trying to evacuate Ghosh's body and bring him back to base camp. The exact cause of death will be announced after post-mortem examination.
Ghosh's departure is the second death in the climbing season of Mount Everest in 2025.
