JAKARTA - Russian negotiators will wait for their Ukrainian counterparts in Istanbul, Turkey starting at 10 am on Friday, Russian chief Vladimir Medinsky said.

"Tomorrow morning (today), starting at 10 am to be exact, we will wait for the Ukrainian side, who will arrive for the meeting. We are ready to work," he said, quoted from TASS May 16.

As previously reported, Medinsky, who is the head of the Russian delegation in negotiations this time, said Moscow's goal was to achieve long-term peace with Kyiv, find common ground and get rid of the reasons for the conflict.

Medinsky, who helped lead the failed 2022 negotiations, said Russia considered the planned negotiations in Istanbul a continuation of failed 2022 negotiations.

"We consider these negotiations a continuation of the peace process in Istanbul, which unfortunately was stopped by Ukraine three years ago," Medinsky told reporters in Istanbul.

Kyiv said the requirements offered by Russia in 2022 were unacceptable and would be considered a capitulation.

"Delegation is determined to take a constructive stance, to find solutions and possible common ground. The task of direct negotiations with Ukraine sooner or later is to achieve long-term peace by eliminating the basic roots of the conflict," Medinsky explained.

Apart from Medinsky, the Russian delegation this time also includes Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Galuzin; Head of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Russian Armed Forces, Igor Kostyukov; and Deputy Defense Minister Alexander Fomin.

It is known that days after Russian President Vladimir Putin sent tens of thousands of troops to Ukraine in February 2022, Russia and Ukraine began talks in Belarus which were later moved to Istanbul, Turkey.

A draft considered there establishes a framework for possible settlements known as "Komunike Istanbul".

2022 talks stalled in May, but Russian officials have long argued that settlements could be reached in accordance with Istanbul's Communique.

Head of the Russian Delegation for the talks with Ukraine Vladimir Medinsky:

Tomorrow, starting 10 a.m., we will be waiting for the Ukraine side, that should arrive for the meeting, to begin the talks.
