JAKARTA - Russian President Vladimir Putin thanked North Korea, Kim Jong-un and the Korean People's Army units for their assistance in releasing the Kursk Region from Ukraine's formation, the Kremlin's press service reported Monday.
"Our North Korean friends' steps are guided by a sense of true solidarity, justice and friendship," President Putin stressed in a statement issued by the Kremlin, quoted from TASS April 28.
"We really appreciate this and sincerely thank the Chairman of the State Affairs Committee,riam Kim Jong-un, and to all North Korean leaders and people," President Putin continued.
"We commend the heroism of North Korean soldiers, the extraordinary training, and dedication shown during fighting, hand in hand with the Russian army, defending our homeland as their own property," he stressed.
"They fulfill their duties with honor and courage, covering themselves with never faded glory," said President Putin.
Ukraine on August 6, 2024 carried out its largest cross-border attack on Russian territory since World War II, breaking through the border to the western Kursk region supported by swarms of drones and heavy weaponry, including Western-made.
Ukrainian troops seized about 1,300 square km (500 square miles) of Russia's Kursk territory in what Kyiv called an attempt to gain a bargaining position in upcoming negotiations and forced Russia to divert troops from eastern Ukraine.
But in mid-February, Russia reclaimed at least 800 square km (300 square miles) of the Kursk region and in recent days launched a massive offensive from various directions threatening to cut off Ukraine's supply lines and potential troop withdrawal routes.
