The Makassar Customs Enforcement Team succeeded in thwarting an attempt to smuggle 347,200 illegal cigarettes without excise stamps sent via expedition routes in two different locations in the Makassar City area, South Sulawesi.
"We take firm action against any excise violations, because they endanger public health and harm the state," said Head of the Makassar Customs Office, Ade Irawan, quoted from Antara, Thursday, April 24.
The first action was taken against suspicious packages containing Tobacco Product Excise Goods (BKC HT). As a result, 210,000 cigarettes of the SMITH and SMITH LIGHT brands were found without excise stamps.
The second action took place in mid-April in different expedition warehouses. The team again found 137,200 illegal cigarettes of various brands such as Boss Caffe Latte, Geboy Flavour, airlifting, Manchester, to fake Gudang Garam.
These illegal cigarettes are thought to be sent to a number of areas including Maros, Barru, North Luwuk, Gorontalo, Konawe, Poso, to Banggai Islands.
It is estimated that the total value of goods reached Rp535 million with a potential state loss of Rp351 million, consisting of excise value, HT VAT, and cigarette tax.
The perpetrator will be charged with Article 54 in conjunction with Article 56 of Law Number 11/1995 concerning Excise, with a threat of imprisonment of 1.5 years, as well as a fine of two to ten times the excise value.
