JAKARTA - The family as the closest circle to protecting Indonesian citizens (WNI), is expected to play an active role in preventing their family members from being involved in online scams abroad.

That was said by the Director of Protection for Indonesian Citizens at the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Judha Nugraha, when revealing that there were more than 7,000 cases of online scams experienced by Indonesian citizens in various countries.

"From 2020 to April 2025, a total of 7,027 cases of online scams have hit Indonesian citizens, spread over 10 countries, including seven countries in Southeast Asia, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and South Africa," Judha explained in a press statement at the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Thursday 24 April.

Judha further said that his party had made various efforts. From February to March yesterday, a total of 699 Indonesian citizens were repatriated from Myawaddy, Myanmar in three waves.

The first wave of 46 Indonesian citizens on February 20, the second wave of 84 people on February 28 and the third wave consisted of two flights, February 18 and 19, with a total of 569 Indonesian citizens who were successfully repatriated.

"There are still Indonesian citizens in Myawaddy. We still receive 30 complaints from Indonesian citizens who are still in Myawaddy," said Judha.

"Based on the deepening of 699 Indonesian citizens who can be sent home, they testify, there are still many Indonesian citizens there. Some of the Indonesian citizens choose to stay at Myawaddy and work there, do not want to go home. There are also 30 complaints," explained Judha.

He further explained that effective prevention steps are needed, not only protection of victims. it is necessary to take law enforcement steps, prevent and also cooperate.

In the context of prevention, continued Judha, his party is very supportive and cooperative from various parties, including the family as the closest circle of the protection system.

"In many cases when asked, we did an in-depth study of the family, where the child worked? Don't know. How does the child work? Don't know. Where do you work at? Don't know. Who is working with, who is recruiting? Don't know," said Judha.

"Families as the closest circle to protecting wni, (must) actively take preventive measures," Judha hoped.

"When there are family members who are going abroad to work, please actively ask, where to work, who is the company, whether they already have the correct passport, the right work visa, whether they have signed a work contract in Indonesia," Judha continued.

"We can confirm that the 7,027 (cases) have never signed contracts in Indonesia," said Judha.
