JAKARTA - Russian President Vladimir Putin's main security adviser, Sergei Shoigu, discussed Ukraine with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

Dialogue between Russia and the United States is among the issues discussed with Kim.

As reported by Reuters from TASS, Friday, March 21, Shoigu's trip came after Putin recently agreed to halt attacks on Ukraine's energy facilities for a while, but declined to support the full ceasefire for 30 days proposed by US President Donald Trump.

US, Ukrainian, and South Korean officials say North Korea has deployed more than 10,000 troops sent to the battlefield in the Kursk region of eastern Russia, and also delivered heavy weapons including artillery and ballistic missiles.

North Korea is believed to have received military and civilian technology as well as economic assistance from Moscow in return.

Moscow and Pyongyang initially denied reports of the deployment, but in October 2024 Putin did not deny that North Korean forces were in Russia, and a North Korean official said such action was legally legal.

Last year, Russia and North Korea signed an important agreement that includes joint defense provisions.

North Korean state media KCNA reported the arrival of a delegation led by Shoigu, welcomed by senior government officials and Moscow ambassadors in Pyongyang.

The former defense minister previously made a visit to Pyongyang as North Korea prepares to deploy troops to fight for Russia in its war against Ukraine.

Shoigu said his talks with Kim lasted longer and lasted more than two hours, TASS said.
