JAKARTA - Russian President Vladimir Putin sent a message to Syrian interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa about support for stabilizing the situation in the country. Russia called Putin ready to engage in "practical cooperation".
Putin confirmed Russia's continued "preparation" to develop practical cooperation with Syrian leaders in a whole series of issues in its bilateral agenda "to strengthen friendly Russia-Syria relations," citing Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov as reported by Reuters on Thursday, March 20.
Syria has been rocked by a wave of sectarian killings. The Kremlin said earlier this month that it wanted to see united Syria and "friendly" because the instability there could affect the entire Middle East.
Russia, which has two strategic important military bases in Syria, is one of the main supporters of former President Bashar al-Assad, who fled to Russia after he was ousted in December 2024.
