JAKARTA - United States Presidential Special Envoy Steve Witkoff said the US Government might begin the process of easing anti-Russian sanctions after reaching an agreement for a peaceful settlement in Ukraine.

"President (US) (Donald Trump) did not discuss, specifically, yesterday's sanctions (in a telephone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin)," said Witkoff, launching TASS March 19.

"I think it's obviously a conversation (about the easing of sanctions) that the two leaders will do, and everyone is open to it. But most importantly, we want a solution that means ending the fighting. We want to reach a ceasefire. That's the President's policy. And we will reach a ceasefire, and I think after that, all the other things will be details, sanction relief and all the other things that accompany the full peace agreement," the envoy said in an interview with Bloomberg.

"I have held two meetings at President Trump's direction with President Putin in recent weeks that have collectively reached nearly eight hours. Many other senior officials in the Administration (US) held meetings with their colleagues and partners there (from Russia)," continued Witkoff.

"The President (Trump) has directed all of this. There has been tremendous progress that has been made. Yesterday, in one phone call, we talked about an immediate ceasefire on the energy infrastructure. It changed the game," he added.

Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump had a telephone conversation that lasted about two and a half hours last Tuesday.

President Trump himself described his phone call with President Putin as positive.

"We made a great phone call. It lasted almost two hours," said President Trump at Fox News Channel's "The Ingraham Angle" show.

According to the Kremlin's press service, during the phone call, President Putin reaffirmed his principled commitment to a lasting peaceful settlement of the Ukrainian conflict. The Russian leader stressed the unconditional need "to eliminate the root causes of the crisis and consider Russia's security interests."

The White House said talks aimed at a broader peace plan would begin soon, following yesterday's phone call.
