JAKARTA - Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said Kyiv was not an obstacle to a peace agreement with Russia. He believes the country can achieve a just and lasting peace under the leadership of US President Donald Trump.

Ukraine is awaiting clarity on the peace process following talks between Trump and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin, which is expected to take place on Tuesday.

Trump had previously tried to get Putin to approve a 30-day ceasefire proposal Ukraine received last week, but Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy also consistently said Ukraine's sovereignty was non-negotiable and that Russia should give up the territory it had captured.

"We are not an obstacle to achieving peace, we really hope for unconditional approval from the Russian side for a ceasefire," Sybiha said in a panel discussion in India.

Trump said he would speak with Putin on Tuesday morning about efforts to end Ukraine's war, with Kyiv's territorial concessions and control over the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant likely to be in the spotlight in the talks.

Trump faces tough negotiators in Putin, who Zelenskyy says does not comply with the agreement.

Sybiha accused Moscow of not wanting to end the war, saying Ukraine would never recognize its territory occupied by Russian troops.

"Our approach: now is the time for diplomacy, for strong diplomacy," he said.

"We are also very confident that with President Trump's leadership, we can achieve a just and lasting peace," said the Ukrainian Foreign Minister.

Ukraine's energy infrastructure has been the target of a large-scale attack since the Russian invasion in 2022, resulting in power outages and frozen conditions for millions of people.

Ukraine retaliated by launching a long-range drone strike against Russian oil refineries, pump stations, and ports used for oil and gas exports.
