Hiu Kencana Soldiers Have Fallen, Coordinating Minister For Politics, Law And Security Called Them As Martyrs

JAKARTA - The Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs (Menko Polhukam) of the Republic of Indonesia Mahfud MD called the 53 KRI Nanggala-402 soldiers who died while on duty in the northern waters of Bali Island as martyrs - an Arabic word which if interpreted independently means the sincere fighters.

"Goodbye, facing Alkhaliq, the martyrs (sincere warriors) nation's flower, the crew of Nanggala 402," said Mahfud MD as quoted by Antara, Monday, April 26.

The expression martyrdom is often found in the holy books of the Islamic ummah, whose meaning is often understood as warriors who died while on duty.

"May you all find His paradise. The remaining sons and daughters of the nation will continue to protect and care for the independent NKRI thanks to the grace of Allah the Almighty. Allahumma ighfir lahum" said Mahfud conveying his condolences as well as prayers for the soldiers of KRI Nanggala-402.

Mahfud delivered his condolences not long after the Indonesian National Armed Forces Commander Marshal TNI Hadi Tjahjanto on the fifth day of the search, Sunday, announced that 53 soldiers on board the KRI Nanggala-402 submarine had been declared dead in their duties.

The announcement was made after the search team found a number of authentic evidence that show the KRI Nanggala-402 sank at a depth of 838 meters and the hull of the ship was split into three parts.

"Based on the authentic evidence it can be stated that the KRI Nanggala-402 has sunk and its entire crew has died. Therefore, with sadness "I stated that 53 personnel who were on board the KRI Nanggala-402 had died," said the TNI commander during a press conference at the Base Ops Lanud I Gusti Ngurah Rai, Bali.

"Hiu Kencana's best soldiers have died while carrying out their duties in the waters north of Bali. On behalf of all soldiers and TNI extended families as TNI commander, I would like to convey my deepest condolences to all the families of the fallen soldiers. May God the Greatest give sincerity, patience, and fortitude," said Hadi adding.

Of the 53 TNI soldiers, 49 of them were crew members (ABK), one unit commander, and three weapons personnel.

As for the 53 KRI Nanggala-402 personnel who died in their duties, namely:
