JAKARTA - United States President Donald Trump said on Thursday the envoy, especially Steve Witkoff, was in serious discussions with Russia to end the war in Ukraine.
"Hopefully they will do the right thing," President Trump told reporters during a meeting in the Oval Room with NATO Secretary General (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) Mark Rutte.
President Trump said he did not think Russia would attack US allies.
"That's not going to happen. We'll make sure it doesn't happen," he said.
Witkoff is scheduled to meet with President Putin on Thursday evening, Politico reported, citing the Russian government-owned news agency, Izvestia.
Last Tuesday, the United States and Ukraine agreed on a 30-day full ceasefire plan, at a meeting in Saudi Arabia.
The US will communicate the results of a meeting in Jeddah with Russia. Ukraine itself expects assurances of the security and involvement of Europe in any peace efforts.
Earlier, Russian President Yury Ushakov said President Vladimir Putin was expected to meet Witkoff on Thursday, when ready, quoted from TASS.
