JAKARTA - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) issued an early warning of the potential for heavy rain accompanied by lightning to strong winds that could occur in several provinces in Indonesia on Sunday, April 25.

In an early weather warning, BMKG predicts areas that have the potential to experience heavy rain accompanied by lightning and strong winds, such as in Aceh, Gorontalo, Jambi, West Java, South Kalimantan, Central Kalimantan, North Kalimantan.

Then Maluku, Papua, West Papua, Riau, South Sulawesi, South Sumatra and North Sumatra. Meanwhile, the majority of other provinces are sunny.

Particularly in the DKI Jakarta area, BMKG predicts that all areas from the Thousand Islands to South Jakarta will be sunny in the morning and cloudy from noon until night.

Meanwhile, in West Java, there is the potential for rain accompanied by lightning and strong winds that have the potential to occur in parts of Garut, Bandung, Purwakarta, Sukabumi, and Bogor in the afternoon to evening.

Head of the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency Dwikorita Karnawati said that her agency still faces challenges related to efforts to disseminate early warning information so that the public is more vigilant.

Dwikorita said that the early warnings issued by her party did not always attract or get the attention of the community, for example when issuing early warnings about the impact of the Seroja Tropical Cyclone.

"There are social media experts who analyze when an early warning was issued, it became a rising trend. But then it lost to the trending Atta-Aurel marriage, so an early warning was deemed unattractive", said Dwikorita.

Another case was when the BMKG issued an early warning of extreme weather in Jakarta, but it did not get the attention of the public even though it was announced both a week before and three days before heavy rains occurred.

"But once the American Embassy used BMKG data to provide early warning in English, everyone is interested", she said
