Joint law enforcement officers in Malaysia have tightened security in the Malaysian-Thailand border area following the alleged suspect in the Golok River bomb explosion in southern Thailand fleeing to Malaysia.

"We have been conducting ongoing patrols because we anticipate cross-border smuggling and crimes will increase during Ramadan," said Southeast Brigade Commander GOF Datuk Nik Ros Azhan Nik Ab Hamid when contacted, Monday, March 10, quoted from Bernama.

Azhan said joint law enforcers came from Battalion 7, Battalion 9, and Senoi Praaq GOF personnel. They monitor and patrol the border according to their respective duties.

"With the recent incident in the Golok River, we will further tighten security measures to detect any attempt by certain parties or criminals to enter Malaysia," he continued.

Azhan added that the GOF patrol zone covers 106 kilometers along the Malaysia-Thailand border, with the support of the Marine Police.

According to him, all rat lanes that have the potential to be traversed by illegal crossings will continue to be monitored.

"The intelligence unit will continue to provide information and maintain close communication to track any cross-border criminal activity," he said.

Earlier, an explosion occurred at a security post outside the office of the Sungai Golok district, Thailand on the evening of Sunday, March 9. The incident was accompanied by gunfire from a group of attackers resulting in the death of two Thai security personnel and eight others injured.

Responding to the incident, the Malaysian Ministry of Foreign Affairs appealed to its citizens traveling or living in southern Thailand provinces, including Pattani, Yala, and Narathiwat, to remain cautious following the explosion in the Golok River.

The ministry also recommended that Malaysians postpone all non-essential trips to these areas for a while.
