JAKARTA - The Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) will carry out weather modification operations to reduce rainfall. Head of BMKG Dwikorita Karnawati said the concept of operation would remove rain clouds from vulnerable areas as an effort to mitigate floods in a number of locations.
Dwikorita gave an example, the modification of the weather can be intended to move rain clouds to other locations such as reservoirs and the sea, thus preventing rain from entering vulnerable areas.
"So it is dropped in the reservoir or at sea, the concept is like that, because if it is on land, it will be flooded elsewhere," said Dwikorita, Tuesday, March 4.
Dwikorita explained, if the weather modifications were not carried out, the rain clouds could resume to groups, causing high rainfall at certain points. This, he said, was the main cause of high rainfall until floods occurred, especially in West Java and Jakarta.
"So don't let the clouds grow that much so that they still come a little lower at sea, come slightly lower in the reservoir or something," he added about efforts to modify the weather by the BMKG.
In this weather modification operation, BMKG collaborated with the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) considering that the flood status was already in the emergency response phase. BMKG, he said, would support the procurement of weather modification technology and determine the points for the operation.
