JAKARTA - Volker T\"urk's Head of Human Rights (HAM) expressed deep concern Monday over the "fundamental change of direction" in the United States (US), warning of divisive rhetoric is used to deceive and divide society.
"We have enjoyed bipartisan support from the US on human rights for decades. I am now very concerned about the fundamental changes in direction that have occurred both domestically and internationally," T\", said T\"urk, in a speech that did not directly refer to United States President Donald Trump, who has served since January, quoted from Daily Sabah March 3.
"The policy aimed at protecting individuals from discrimination is now labeled as discriminatory. Divided rhetoric is used to distort, deceive, and divide. This creates fear and anxiety among many people," he added.
Turk's speech to the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, Switzerland marks its strongest comments to date on the impact of Uncle Sam's new country administration policy.
President Trump, who withdrew from the council in February, has faced criticism for his approach.
Since taking office on January 20, the Republican president has issued several executive orders aimed at disbanding diversity, equality and inclusive programs across federal and private sector agencies.
