Mimika Police, Central Papua said climbing to Puncak Cartensz Pyramid was temporarily suspended after the deaths of two climbers, namely Lilie Wijayanti Poegiono and Elsa Laksono.

"The temporary climb has been suspended since the evacuation process for the two victims," said Mimika Police Chief AKBP Billyandha Hilde Budiman as reported by ANTARA, Monday, March 3.

According to Billyandha, the bodies of the two victims were successfully evacuated to Mimika Hospital and then returned to their hometown Monday (3/3) at 10.45 WIT using Lion Air.

"The Elsa Laksono body was evacuated on Sunday (2/3) while Lilie Wijayanti Poegiono was evacuated on Monday (3/3) at 06.53 WIT," he said.

Both were declared dead on Saturday (1/3/2025) on the climb of Puncak Cartensz Pyramid due to hypothermia or Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS).

In the evacuation process it went smoothly despite bad weather constraints where previously the two bodies were buried at the Mimika Hospital before being dispatched to their hometowns.

The climb to Puncak Cartensz Pyramid was temporarily suspended indefinitely.
