Minister Of Environment Explains "Disposal Island" Only For Residu, Not Hoarding Garbage

JAKARTA - Minister of Environment (LH) Hanif Faisol Nurofiq explained that the right concept of "sand island" is not to hoard garbage but to become a place for the end of residue after optimal waste management.

Minister LH Hanif said the concept of a "sand island" like what the Singaporean government did on Sembakau Island was only a place to store residue after processing their waste, one of which was by using an incinerator.

"So later don't get me wrong if later a city will build a garbage island, it shouldn't be like that. So only the actual residue, the remains of the burning on Sembakau Island, if we want to follow like Singapore," he said as quoted by ANTARA, Thursday, February 27.

He explained that waste management needs to be carried out, including by local governments that have an obligation to manage waste, in accordance with Law Number 18 of 2008 concerning Waste Management.

His party is implementing the necessary steps, including law enforcement to curb 343 final processing sites (TPA) that are still carrying out open dumping or hoarding garbage without processing or reducing its onsets.

Setelah penertiban TPAopen dumping tersebut, dia mengatakan akan memberikan sosialisasi atau arahan kepada kepala daerah untuk melaksanakan upaya pencegahan dan pengurangan munculan sampah sehingga hanya sisa residisi yang tidak bisa diproses lagi berakhir di TPA.

Not only that, socialization and education also continue to be carried out to the community to change the culture at the grassroots related to waste and increase the reduction and sorting of waste starting from households.

"So actually the mechanism for resolving waste must be like that," said Hanif.

Previously, Deputy Governor of DKI Jakarta Rano Karno said that his party was discussing the discourse on the construction of a waste island that had previously been conveyed by the Acting Governor of DKI Jakarta 2022-2024 Heru Budi Hartono.
