JAKARTA - US Vice President JD Vance criticized EU regulatory approach to artificial intelligence (AI) that could "kill the transformative industry."

"We believe that excessive regulations against the AI sector can kill the transformative industry, just as the industry begins to grow, and we will make every effort to push for pro-growth AI policies," Vance said at a peak AI meeting held in Paris. .

"And I want to see the nuances of the deregulation appear in many of these conference conversations."

The transformative industry refers to the sector or business sector which brings major changes in the way of working, producing, or serving in the community.

AI is considered a transformative industry because it has the potential to revolutionize various sectors, such as manufacturing, health, finance, and communication, by increasing efficiency, automation, and innovation.

Vice President Vance stressed that the US wanted to cooperate with EU, adding: "But to create such trust, we need an international regulatory regime that encourages the creation of AI technology rather than strangling it."

He called on European countries to "kick this new limit with optimism rather than fear," and noted that the US was developing an action plan "that avoids regimes of regulation that are too careful."

Vance said the US was "unable and would not accept" that some countries "are considering tightening regulations on US technology companies with international traces."

Vice President Vance threatened "attributive international regulation" and the fact that many US companies "are forced to deal with the EU Digital Services Act and major regulations it makes about removing content and monitoring of so-called misinformation."

Vance also highlighted the difficulties for smaller companies to comply with EU's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) which "means paying an endless legal compliance fee or risking a large fine."

"Now, for some people, the easiest way to avoid a dilemma is to block EU users from the start, is this really the future we want?" he asked.

He said creating a safe internet place for children is different from preventing "men or adult women from accessing opinions that the government considers misinformation."

Vance promised that President Donald Trump's administration "will ensure that the AI system developed in America is free from ideological bias and will never limit the right of our citizens to speak freely."

The vice president, in that context, also denounced "hostile enemies" who "armed AI software to rewrite history, supervise users, and censor speech."

Vance said several authoritarian regimes had stolen and used AI to strengthen military intelligence and surveillance capabilities, steal foreign data, and spread propaganda to undermine national security in other countries.

"I want to emphasize that this government will block those efforts, period. We will protect US technology and American chips from theft and abuse," Vance promised.

The US vice president also stressed that AI will never "replace humans" or workers, but will contribute so that they become more "productive, more prosperous, and freer."

"In every major decision regarding the AI policy issued by the federal government, the Trump administration will ensure that American workers have a role in the decision-making process, and we are very proud of that," Vance continued.
