PEKANBARU - Residents of the Cendrawasih housing estate on Jalan Surya Garuda Sakti, Pekanbaru City, Riau Province, were shocked by the appearance of a wild tapir in a fish pond.

"I heard a very loud sound. Byuuur, like the sound of someone splashing into the pool, I thought a child had fallen into my pool," said Julaiha, owner of the pool where the tapir got lost, reported by Antara, Tuesday, April 20.

The tapir, thought to be an adult, fell into an empty fish pond behind Julaiha's house. He said the pond happened to have no fish, but there was still water.

"I saw when his head appeared from the water I was immediately scared. I went up to the attic I saw again, it was a tapir," he said.

He said he had never seen such a tapir around his house. The fish pond borders oil palm land, but far from the forest.

Julaiha then contacted the head of the local RW who forwarded it to the authorities. Currently, officials of the Riau Natural Resources Conservation Center (BBKSDA) are already on site.

Initially, these protected animals could not be removed from the pool which has a depth of about 170 meters.

Rescuers, including veterinarians and paramedics, tried to sedate the tapir. Veterinarian Danang from BBKSDA Riau was seen twice firing anesthetic bullets with a peralon.

However, until now the tapir is still awake. This could be the result of noise from the crowd of residents who surrounded the location to see the protected animals. The pool owner, Julaiha, hopes that the tapir can be saved.

"The tapir tried to climb it himself from the pool but couldn't. I was confused about what to do because he was big and fat like a calf," he said.
