Bareskrim Polri Arrests New Suspect In Prabowo's Deepfake Case

The Criminal Investigation Unit of the National Police has again arrested a suspect in deepfake fraud using artificial intelligence or AI technology that resembles the face of President Prabowo Subianto.

Recruited Cyber Crime Bareskrim Polri Brigadier General Himawan Bayu Aji said the suspect's arrest took place in Pringsewu Regency, Lampung.

"The perpetrator was arrested at his residence, precisely in the Pringsewu Regency area," Himawan said when confirmed, Wednesday, February 5.

However, it was not conveyed in detail about the suspect's identity. The reason is that the investigation process is still ongoing for the development of the case.

"This is the result of the development of the previously successfully revealed case," said Himawan.

Previously, Bareskrim arrested a person with the initials AMA related to a similar case in Bumi Nambung District, Central Lampung Regency, Lampung Province.

In launching the action, the suspect changed or edited Prabowo and Gibran's photos into video recordings as if the current government was offering assistance to people who were in trouble.

Then, the video was uploaded to various social media accounts so that the wider community could see the video made using AI technology.

"In the uploaded video, the suspect includes a WhatsApp number that can be contacted," he said.

The inclusion of the phone number is in the hope that the public will contact the suspect with the initials AMA.

If anyone contacts him, the suspect will direct the victim to fill out an aid recipient registration form.

"After that the victim was asked to transfer a sum of money on the grounds that the victim's administrative costs or the community who had paid the administrative costs were promised disbursement of funds by the suspect," he said.

The suspects were charged with criminal charges under Article 51 paragraph (1) in conjunction with Article 35 of Law Number 1 of 2024 concerning the Second Amendment to Law Number 11 of 2008 concerning Electronic Information and Transactions and Article 378 of the Criminal Code.
