JAKARTA - Lebanese lawmakers have started voting in the presidential election to fill vacant positions since 2022. Political sources expect military commander General Joseph Aoun to be elected.
The election of Aou, who led the US-backed Lebanese military and has Washington support, will show the reduced influence of the Iran-backed Hezbollah group after the devastating war with Israel.
Reported by Reuters on Thursday, January 9, Aoun needs the support of 86 out of 128 MPs to be elected. A second round of votes will be held if no candidate wins in the first round.
