BMKG Urges 16 Regions In Aceh To Beware Of Floods To Be Triggered By High Rain

BANDA ACEH - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) appealed to 16 regions in the Aceh Province to be aware of the potential for flooding triggered by high rainfall, considering that the area nicknamed Tanah Rencong is still in the rainy season.

BMKG Class I forecaster Sultan Iskandar Muda (SIM) Miftahul Jannah said that currently Aceh is still in the rainy season. These areas are expected to rain up to high intensity in the early warning for the next three days.

"Be aware of the potential for hydrometeorological disasters such as floods, landslides, strong winds and others due to continuous and long-duration heavy rains," he said as quoted by ANTARA, Tuesday, January 7.

He explained that in the next three days, BMKG will be observed wind bends (shearlines) and convergence in the Aceh region. In addition, the condition of the warm sea level temperature anomaly in the waters north of Aceh can also increase the potential for additional water vapor mass.

"Some of these conditions can have the potential for rain cloud growth in the Aceh region," he said.

The areas that have the potential to experience heavy rain accompanied by lightning or lightning and strong winds due to these conditions include Central Aceh, Aceh Jaya, West Aceh, North Nagan Raya Aceh, Bener Meriah, Gayo Lues, Southeast Aceh, Subulussalam, South Aceh, Pidie, Aceh Singkil, East Aceh, Aceh Besar, Pidie Jaya and Southwest Aceh.

"For now, these areas are included in the category of being alert to flooding," he said.

On the other hand, BMKG also reminded the forecast for moderate category sea waves in Aceh waters between 1.25 - 2.5 meters, especially in West Aceh waters, Banyak Island, Aceh Singkil and the southern waters of Simeulue.

His party also appealed to small boat fishermen to be careful when looking for fish in the sea, because it would be very risky if the wind speed reached 15 knots and the sea wave height reached 1.25 meters.

"Wind patterns generally move from northeast to southeast with wind speeds ranging from 05 - 22 knots," he said.
