Russia Claims To Occupy Kurakhoove City Near Ukraine's Logistics Center

JAKARTA - Russia claims it has made important progress in eastern Ukraine. The Russian Ministry of Defense said its forces had seized the city of Kurakhove, 32 km (20 miles) south of Pokrovsk, the Ukrainian logistics center that Russian troops had been aiming for for months.

Reported by Reuters on Monday, January 6, the weeks-long struggle for the Kurakhove will allow Moscow forces to further their progress in Ukraine's Donetsk region.

Ukrainian monitoring group DeepState, which tracks the front lines using open sources, shows most of the Kurakhoves are under Russian control.

The Ukrainian Khortytsia troop group said Russian troops continued to attack the Kurakhove but the Ukrainian side attempted to identify and expel the Russian strike group at the front.

Russian war blogs say Ukraine carried out an attack on the Kursk region for a second day. One of them described the alarming situation.

Ukraine began a new attack on Sunday, January 5, in Kursk, where its troops broke through the border on August 6, 2024 and over the past five months rejected Russia's attempts to expel them.

The Russian Defense Ministry said its forces managed to push back Ukraine's first attack north of the highway to the regional capital Kursk.
