Ciputra Hospital Surabaya And GE Healthcare Present ABUS Technology For Early Detection Of Breast Cancer

Early detection has a crucial role in identifying breast cancer, especially with the high number of breast cancer cases in Indonesia.

Based on data from Globocan 2022, there were 66,271 new cases of breast cancer, which contributed 16.2 percent of the total new cancer cases in Indonesia. In addition, the death toll from breast cancer reached more than 22,598 cases, which further emphasized the importance of early detection.

For this reason, Ciputra Hospital Surabaya in collaboration with GE Healthcare presents advanced technology, Automated BREAK Ultrasound System (ABUS), to support early detection of breast cancer at Ciputra Hospital in Surabaya.

ABUS serves for early detection of breast cancer through rapid and accurate automatic 3D scans. With high image quality, this tool helps in identifying abnormal growth/persion or changes in breast tissue, enabling a faster and more precise diagnosis.

Dr. Desak Gede Agung Suprabawati, Sp.B(K) Onk, an Oncology Surgeon Specialist, said that the examination using ABUS provides comfort, does not contain radiation, and is very effective for detecting cancer in dense breast tissue without masking effects.

"Therefore, ABUS is very suitable for women under the age of 40, pregnant women, patients with implants, and those with radiation sensitivity. Mammography is indeed a gold standard for breast cancer detection, but for women with dense breast tissue, examination results can be limited," he said, in a written statement, Saturday, January 4.

Dr. Sidharta, Sp.Rad, Radiology Specialist explained the importance of understanding the risk factors and symptoms of breast cancer cannot be ignored.

"In clinical practice, we often encounter patients who come at advanced stages due to early detection delays. ABUS technology has proven to be able to increase the detection of invasive breast cancer by up to 55 percent compared to mammographic tests alone," he explained.

The collaboration between GE Healthcare and Ciputra Hospital also involves efforts to educate the public through health talk and talk shows, which emphasizes the importance of conducting Self Breast Examination (SADARI) and getting to know more about breast cancer. In addition, this activity also includes hospital tours and breast cancer checks.
