JAKARTA - The people of the Riau Islands (Kepri) are asked to be aware of the potential for increasing the maximum sea level which can cause coastal flooding or tidal flooding
The appeal was conveyed by the Head of the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) of the Class I Meteorological Station Hang Nadim Batam, Ramlan on Monday, December 30.
"As a result of the new moon phase on December 29, 2024, it has the potential to increase the maximum sea level and cause coastal flooding or tidal flooding," he said in his statement.
He appealed to coastal communities to be aware of the coastal flood phenomenon which is predicted to have the potential to occur from December 29, 2024 to January 4, 2025.
A number of areas that have the potential for tidal flooding include Batam City covering the coast of Batu Aji, Batu Ampar, Sekupang, and Nongsa sub-districts, in Lingga Regency covering the coasts of West Singkep, Singkep Pesisir, and Senayang sub-districts.
Then in Tanjungpinang City, it includes the coast of Tanjungpinang Barat, Tanjungpinang Kota, and Bukit Bestari sub-districts, as well as in Bintan Regency covering the coast of North Bintan, Sebong Bay, and East Bintan sub-districts.
"This increase in sea tides has an impact on disruption of transportation around ports and coasts, community activities, and loading and unloading activities at ports," said Ramlan.
