Be Careful Adoption Of AI Technology For TNI Alutsista, Ministry Of Defense: We Don't Want To Be Gegabah

JAKARTA - The Ministry of Defense (Kemenhan) ensures that it will be careful in adopting artificial intelligence (AI) technology for the TNI's main weapon system (alutsista) in 2025.

This is done because the Ministry of Defense sees that AI technology is not yet fully reliable in carrying out defense missions.

"We also don't want to be reckless, of course we go through a study through the process of conducting a study, so that at the time it may be held properly with the needs in Indonesia," said Karo Public Relations of the Secretariat General of the Ministry of Defense, Brigadier General Frega Wenas Inkiriwang when met at the Ministry of Defense building, Central Jakarta, Thursday 19 December, confiscated by Antara.

According to Frega, AI technology in the world of weapons has several shortcomings, one of which is determining the target of attacks that are not precise.

This, he continued, is very crucial because it determines the success of a mission.

"We see that in some areas of conflict, even though using AI, it turns out that the precision is not fully accurate, there are also wrong targets, such as in some areas of conflict, finally targeting civilians," he said.

Despite the many shortcomings, Frega acknowledged that AI technology in the defense world is growing and Indonesia must adopt this. He ensured that the development of AI technology would continue to be carried out in order to strengthen the TNI's weapons.

"When we talk about AI in the context of defense, in the context of the military, it has become something that cannot be encouraged," he explained.

Previously, the ranks of the TNI planned to develop AI technology in the defense world. One that is serious about deepening AI technology is the Indonesian Air Force.

"The latest technological equipment that supports cyber and AI is still not too complete. The technology will be fulfilled by 2025 based on the evaluation in 2024," said Head of the Air Force Information Service, First Marshal of the Indonesian Armed Forces Ardi Syahri, to the media crew after his staff conducted an evaluation of the work of the Indonesian Air Force during 2024 in the TNI AU Headquarters area, East Jakarta.

According to Ardi, the Indonesian Air Force has developed AI technology for the purpose of securing the airspace in 2024.

However, the development is deemed not optimal because it still requires funds for the procurement of defense technology.

One thing to add is the procurement of technology facilities at the 506 Bogor Education Squadron, West Java.

"Like laboratories, we have to complete the procurement of computer equipment and so on," said Ardi.

He added that the development of AI technology for defense has been going well during 2024. This can be seen from the involvement of defense operations using AI in the 2024 Angkasa Yudha Joint Exercise activities some time ago.

Ardi ensured that the ranks of the Indonesian Air Force would seriously develop AI technology in the defense world to support their duties in defending Indonesian territory.
