BMKG: Rain In A Number Of Big Cities On Thursday Afternoon

JAKARTA The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) predicts rain with various intensities will flush a number of major cities in Indonesia on Thursday, December 19, 2024. Cities such as Makassar, Mataram, and Denpasar are included in areas that will experience rain.

BMKG weather forecaster Azhari Putri said, for Sumatra Island, it is estimated that Pekanbaru City is expected to be cloudy, while light rain is expected to occur in Banda Aceh, Medan, Padang, and Tanjung Pinang, Jambi, Bengkulu, and Lampung.

"Be aware of the potential for rain accompanied by lightning in Pangkal Pinang and Palembang cities," he reminded.

For the island of Java, he said, light rain is expected in Serang, Jakarta, Semarang, Yogyakarta, and Surabaya. Meanwhile, moderate-intensity rain is expected to occur in the city of Bandung

As for the areas of Bali and Nusa Tenggara, Azhari said that light rain is expected to occur in Mataram City.

"Be aware of the potential for rain accompanied by lightning in Denpasar and Kupang cities," he added.

In Kalimantan, said Azhari, light rain is expected in Pontianak, Samarinda, and Banjarmasin. He also reminded to be aware of the potential for rain accompanied by lightning in the cities of Tanjung Selor and Palangkaraya.

He said, for the Sulawesi area, Kendari City is estimated to have fled.

"Rain with light intensity is expected to occur in Makassar, Palu, and Gorontalo cities. Beware of the potential for rain accompanied by lightning in the cities of Mamuju and Manado," he said.

Then, for the eastern part of Indonesia, the weather is expected to be thick cloudy in the cities of Sorong and Manokwari. Then, light rain is expected to occur in the cities of Ternate, Nabire, and Jayapura. Meanwhile, he said, rain with moderate intensity is expected to occur in the cities of Ambon and Jayawijaya.

Previously, the Head of the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), Dwikorita Karnawati, said in Jakarta, Monday (16/12) that his party together with the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), TNI, and Polri would carry out weather modifications to anticipate potential natural disasters during the Christmas and New Year holidays.

In addition, Dwikorita explained that atmospheric dynamics phenomena, such as Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) and the potential cold mission (cold air wave) moving from mainland Asia (Siberia) to western Indonesia, are projected to be active during the Christmas and New Year periods. These two phenomena, according to him, have the potential to increase the intensity and volume of rainfall in various parts of Indonesia.
